Focus on the Issue

Do you care what political views others hold? Do you care what religious beliefs they embrace? Should everyone be just like you? Are you in charge of their preferences? Think everyone should go to college and all women should work outside of their homes, leaving all child rearing to??? Or the opposite, all mothers should stay home full time, pulling warm homemade cookies out of the oven just as Jr. walks through the door from school? Should everyone have the same dress code as you do? Should all people have a dog? A child? How far do you take these prejudices? Continue reading

Why Can’t You Just Control Your Drinking?

We interrupt this series on Healthy Relationships to bring you a bulletin. This just in: heavy alcohol use can interfere with relationships!

“I don’t want to stop drinking. I want to drink moderately, like two or three beers a night. If I do that I can get my wife/girlfriend/husband/boss off my back. I think if I just stick to beer, maybe wine when we go out to eat, I’ll be okay. It’s the hard stuff that’s a problem.” “Or maybe I could drink beer during the week, and the other stuff, just one or two…maybe three drinks, on weekends.” Continue reading

Marijuana? Is it just an herb?

The marijuana subject is always controversial. Will it be more or less so than my last column? Even alcoholics in recovery sometimes have a hard time understanding that getting high on anything is getting high. You can eat, snort, shoot or smoke your alcohol and drugs and your brain does not know the difference. The fact that you don’t get a hangover, or that nobody knows, is immaterial. Loaded is loaded.

Why not smoke/eat this herb? Why spend much of your life stoned? Is your life really so bad that you cannot tolerate reality? Are you so boring that you cannot live in your head without using a mind altering substance? I hear you countering with, “I just like to be stoned; I can stop any time I want.” Anyone can stop, but can you stop starting? Continue reading

Risky Business

“If you really knew me, you would not like me!” This is the refrain playing over and over in the heads of so many human beings. I know very few dogs and cats, almost no birds and not one elk or deer who think this way. Corollaries to the above are, “I am not good enough,” “I can’t do it right.” This is the junk that occupies space and time in our weary minds and keeps us from being the best and most comfortable human beings we can be. These negative recordings come from long ago, infiltrating our brains from birth, probably prior to, and indefinitely into adulthood. Shut off the valve that indiscriminately allows the negative and critical to enter, uninvited, into the fiber of your being! Continue reading

Prescription Drug Addiction

Several recent tragedies have occurred in our community. A death due to prescription drug addiction and overdose, other recent prescription drug overdoses resulting in hospitalization, one a probable suicide attempt, one resulting in brain damage, and several non-fatal overdoses are affecting many lives. Countless other drug users are walking around and driving, on the same roads as you and I, stoned, loaded on their legal drugs. The disease of drug addiction (alcoholism is just alcohol addiction) is treatable. The excruciating pain to the family, as well as to the addict himself, that results from the consequences of addiction can be resolved. Continue reading
